Dexters are a naturally small breed of native Irish cattle. They are a true dual purpose cow with wonderful tasting beef
as well as ample milk for their calf or the house. They come in three colours, wholly black, red or dun.
We have a long established and successful Dexter herd dating back to 1990. We have always taken pride in our
Dexters and their breeding and this has shown in the fortunes of our show cattle. Our Dexters are all bred for specific
qualities, ie conformation, udders and temperament. Any calves not coming up to our expectations are not registered
as pedigree and will be reared for beef. Only first quality stock is registered. This is especially true for bull calves. Not
only would they need to conform to all aspects of our standards but genetically they will only be taken from our best
bloodlines.
Although we breed both black and red dexters - we take a special interest in the reds and have spent years
eradicating a lot of the undesirable and often difficult to get rid of problems that a red may have such as dark nose
and shaded face. It is always harder to breed a
nice red and we think we have gone a long way to
achieving it.
